On Wednesday, the bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers flew to Taiwan, neglecting the threats from the Chinese government.
US Lawmakers from the House and Senate, landed in the Taiwan and were greeted with a warm welcome by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen. Following the incident, the Chinese government released a statement condemning the surprise visit of US lawmakers.
Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Rob Portman of Ohio, Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and Republican Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson were the lawmakers that visited Taiwan.
China, upon the visit, accused US and Taiwan officials of ‘Playing with fire’. The spokesperson for the Chinese government tweeted “China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the U.S. and China’s Taiwan region.”
China’s increasing aggression in Taiwan in recent years have increased fears that China will invade the country.
