Despite the ongoing conflict, two major Ukrainian steel industry owners have announced preparations to restart production.
ArcelorMittal SA, the world’s largest steelmaker, said Tuesday that one of its three furnaces at its Kryvyi Rih facility will be restarted. The Ukrainian government ordered the firm to restore manufacturing “to help rebuild the country’s economy.”
Ukrainian steel company Metinvest separately said Tuesday that its joint venture with Zaporizhstal in the country’s southeast would tentatively restart production at two of its four blast furnaces.
The restarts are a welcome boost for Ukrainian industry, which has been hit hard by Russia’s invasion. Ukraine’s large steel industry mothballed operations amid concerns about safety and difficulties in bringing in new supplies and exporting goods.
