The drama, based on a short tale by Michael Connelly, will be directed by the ‘Good Girls Revolt’ creator.
The showrunner for ABC’s upcoming drama Avalon, created by David E. Kelley and Michael Connelly, has been found.
Dana Calvo (Good Girls Revolt, Narcos) will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series. After receiving a straight to series order in February, Avalon, a mystery thriller set on Catalina Island, will be part of ABC’s 2022-23 slate.
The series is based on a short tale by Connelly and follows L.A. Sheriff’s Department Detective Nicole “Nic” Searcy, who oversees a small office on the island, which has 4,000 permanent residents and hosts a million tourists each year, with hundreds of potential stories arriving by ferry every day. Detective Searcy is drawn into a career-defining case that will test her knowledge of herself and the island.
Along with Big Sky, this is Kelley’s second show on ABC. He wrote the pilot for Avalon, but his schedule — which includes Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer (also in partnership with Connelly) and A Man in Full, Peacock’s The Missing, and Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent — prevented him from taking over as showrunner.
Calvo founded and supervised the writers’ room for Netflix’s Narcos after creating the critically acclaimed Good Girls Revolt. Made in Jersey on CBS and Covert Affairs on the USA Network are among her other credits. CAA, Manage-ment, and Jackoway Austen are her agents.
Avalon is produced by A+E Studios and 20th Television. Calvo produces alongside Kelley, Connelly, Ross Fineman of Fineman Entertainment, and Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson of A+E Studios.
