Ukraine thwarts a Russian attack, solely aimed at infiltrating computers and deleting significant files, says government on Tuesday.

The government and cybersecurity report that the adversary state had designed the attack to delete all the important files.
Russian hackers tried to attack Ukraine’s energy system, if the hacking did not fail, it would shut the infrastructure down.
ESSET, a Slovakian cybersecurity company tells that the attack was conducted by Russian’s military agency, GRU.
It further added that it executed similar attacks successfully in 2014 and 2015. These rounds attacked areas in Kyiv, losing their power temporarily.
The latest attack is a Russian attempt to strike key Ukrainian infrastructure, some of which have been successful.
Ukraine has been subjected to a number of “wiper” assaults, which have attacked computers in the Ukrainian government, financial organizations, and internet service providers.
These assaults also aim to wipe large amounts of data from infected systems. Russia has been able to stifle some of the country’s internet service providers.
However, a catastrophic cyberattack on energy infrastructure is one of the most dangerous cyberattacks a government can launch.
A successful attack would have had widespread consequences and would have been the most prominent cyberattack on Ukrainian infrastructure since Russia began its invasion.
The malware was infiltrated in some computers in Ukraine’s energy sector, but the disruptions caused were quickly solved, and no one lost power due to interference.
John Hultquist, vice president of intelligence at the cybersecurity company Mandiant, said, “Any move by Ukraine to stop a major attack like this, given the circumstances, is an outstanding success. The fact that they’re still defending their networks under these conditions is incredible,” praising the defense system.
