According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, approximately two-thirds of all children in Ukraine have fled their homes as a result of Russia’s armed incursion.
According to UNICEF, at least 142 children have died and 229 have been injured as a result of the violence.
UNICEF’s emergency programmes director, Manuel Fontaine, who returned from Ukraine last week, told the United Nations Security Council on Monday that “nearly half” of the 3.2 million children estimated to have remained in their homes “may be at risk of not having enough food,” and that attacks on water system infrastructure and power outages have left an estimated 1.4 million people without access to water in the country.
He claimed that the situation is even worse in cities like Mariupol and Kherson in the south, which have been besieged by Russian forces and have gone weeks without running water, sanitation, or a regular supply of food.
Fontaine stated, “Hundreds of schools and educational facilities have been assaulted or exploited for military objectives.” “Others are being used as civilian shelters.”
