What began as a routine Sunday evening in New York’s Times Square quickly turned into a mass panic as a big manhole explosion and fire left hundreds of people running, with footage uploaded on social media from the site showing terrified visitors fleeing. According to reports, no one was hurt and no property was harmed.
According to local sources, a huge explosion was heard at 7 p.m. (local time), and cameras showed people panicking and running along the street.
Authorities stated that one manhole in the Times Square area erupted due to cable failure and that another manhole was smoking.
As the FDNY tried to put out three manhole fires, the area around West 43rd Street and 7th Avenue was cut off.
Social media videos show terrified visitors and residents running from the area as they try to figure out what is going on.
