60-foot iron bridge stolen in India

A team of scrap metal thieves stole a 500-ton derelict iron bridge in eastern India, authorities said Saturday.

The bridge was robbed Wednesday in Bihar, one of the poorest states.

According to reports, the burglars posed as government irrigation officials.

They came with bulldozers and gas cutters and destroyed the building over two days, Police officer Subhash Kumar told.

“They carried it away in a big truck,” he claimed.

Since a nearby bridge was opened to the public five years ago, the thieves had been chipping away at the 50-year-old structure built over a canal.

The unusual incident was investigated by police on Thursday, but no one has been arrested.
