Trevorrow described the Giganotosaurus’ mentality as “simply wanting to see the earth burn.”
According to Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow, the latest dinosaur to join the Jurassic World universe will have a Joker-like feel
In a teaser interview with Empire magazine published Saturday, the director revealed the name and origins of the new menace. Dominion’s main enemy, the Giganotosaurus (or “Giga” for short), is based on a real-life dinosaur. Unlike the Indominus and Indoraptor from the previous movie, which were both genetic hybrids, the theropod (or dinosaur with three-toed limbs) was a Late Cretaceous creature.
“I wanted something that felt like the Joker,” Trevorrow said of Giga’s personality as the film’s big dino terror. “It just wants to watch the world burn
In real life, the dinosaur appeared to make South America home, but in Dominion, it’s the BioSyn Valley, a nod to the original Jurassic Park and its main nemesis. Dino embryos were stolen from InGen, the bioengineering corporation founded by John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) that cloned extinct dinosaurs and housed them in Jurassic Park, by BioSyn, which paid Wayne Knight’s Dennis Nedry to do so.
Trevor told the magazine that BioSyn will play a significant role in the plot of the future film. “BioSyn was awarded the contract to host the dinosaurs that have been caught by various governments throughout the world,” Trevorrow explained. “They claim it’s a research facility where they can look into the animal’s pharmacological value.” However, there is something more going on.
Mamoudou Athie’s new character, a BioSyn employee named Ramsay Cole, was also teased when discussing BioSyn, with the actor describing Cole as “a really ambitious and forward-thinking young man.”
Jurassic World: Dominion is soon to be released in theaters on June 10
