EXCLUSIVE: Sri Lanka seeks $3 billion in international assistance to avert calamity

COLOMBO, India, 9 April – Sri Lanka will need around $3 billion in foreign aid over the next six months to help restore vital supplies such as gasoline and medication, Finance Minister Ali Sabry said on Saturday.

The island country of 22 million people has been beset by power outages and shortages, which have drew demonstrators to the streets and increased pressure on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“It’s a Herculean undertaking,” Sabry said in his first interview since assuming office last week, alluding to securing $3 billion in bridging finance as the country prepares for IMF discussions this month.
