Masters: Tiger Woods struggles to 78 — his worst-ever round

Tiger Woods shot a six-over-par 78 in the third round of the 86th Masters on Saturday, his worst-ever Masters round despite injury and weariness.

Woods concluded with bogeys at 16 and 17 and a double bogey at the 18th, 14 months after sustaining severe leg injuries in a vehicle accident.

The 15-time major champion shot a seven-over 223 over 54 holes at Augusta National, finishing 18 strokes behind leader Scottie Scheffler.

Woods’ previous worst Masters round was a 77 in the third round of his amateur debut at the Masters in 1996.

After a rollover vehicle accident in February 2021, Woods was hospitalized for weeks and unable to walk for months before pushing his way back via therapy to complete a 17-month layoff this week, enduring discomfort with every stride over rugged Augusta National.

For the first time since the accident, the 46-year-old legend completed a stamina test across the 7,510-yard layout, playing 18 holes for the third day in a row.
