In Gambia’s parliamentary election, voting has begun

The Gambia is holding elections, and the electoral commission has promised voters a free, fair, and transparent process.

A total of 53 seats in parliament are up for grabs.

19 women are running for the legislature, which is the largest number in the country’s history of parliamentary elections.

The president will also appoint five legislators, one of whom would be the Speaker, who will be confirmed by parliament. The president will also appoint the Speaker.

The Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission informed the BBC that it has taken precautions to ensure that security for Saturday’s election would be adequate.

Gambians are well-known for voting in elections with marbles. At the end of the polls, the candidate with the most marbles will be declared the winner.

On Sunday, the results are expected. One of the first duties for the new legislature will be to vote on a new constitution, which is considered as critical by The Gambia’s international allies in order to improve democracy and limit the president’s powers, according to AFP.

President Adama Barrow defeated his competitor and political mentor Ousainou Darboe in the presidential election in December of last year.

That election was the country’s first since former dictator Yahya Jammeh stepped down in 2017.
