After battle in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian military’s Office of Strategic Communications shared a photo on Saturday purporting to depict dead Russian servicemen left behind in a common grave.
“It is a common misconception that Russians do not bury their deceased,” the statement added. “A communal tomb of the occupiers was uncovered by soldiers of the 92nd Mechanized Brigade near Kharkiv while clearing the Vilkhivka settlement.”
The validity of the photo, which depicts at least ten bodies dressed in Russian attire, could not be verified immediately by International media outlets.
One of the unofficial slogans of Russia’s war in Ukraine is “We don’t leave ours behind.”
On March 30, soldiers from the 92nd Mechanized Brigade and volunteer detachments near Kharkiv allegedly destroyed two Russian battalion tactical groups, according to the statement.
Fighting has persisted in the Kharkiv region, which is located in the northeastern part of the country.
Vadym Denysenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, claimed on national television that it had been “shelled nearly all day” and that a Russian onslaught from the direction of Izium was expected in the Kharkiv region.
“Russian forces are still being built up in this direction,” he said. “From the Izium side, we learn that one of the primary missions of RF [Russian troops] is to reach Donbas, Donetsk region, or, to be more precise, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. As a result, this is currently one of the most challenging directions.”
