More than 100 attacks on health facilities have been reported in Ukraine: WHO

Over the previous six weeks, Russia has launched more than 100 strikes in Ukraine on health-care facilities and transport vehicles, including ambulances, in violation of international humanitarian law, according to the World Health Organization.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 73 people were murdered and 51 injured in the attacks, including health staff and patients.

“We are horrified that attacks on health care continue,” Tedros said during a joint press conference with US Health Secretary Xavier Becerra in Washington, D.C., to commemorate World Health Day. The more than 100 attacks were called a “grim milestone” by Tedros.

“Peace is the only way ahead.” “I once again appeal to the Russian Federation to end the conflict”, he added.

Tedros’ words came on the 42nd day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has resulted in the deaths and injury of hundreds of civilians, including dozens of children.

He highlighted WHO and US attempts to maintain Ukraine’s “health system operational.” Working with neighboring countries to promote access to care for refugees is one of the initiatives, as is supplying 180 metric tons of medical supplies to the country’s hardest-hit areas, with plans to increase that support.

The overall number of attacks is more than double what the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated three weeks ago.
