Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, Kanye “Ye” West, Olivia Rodrigo, Drake, Dua Lipa, and Ed Sheeran are among the other top artists.
With 17 nominations, The Weeknd is the most nominated artist for the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.
Doja Cat has 14 nominations; Justin Bieber, Kanye “Ye” West, and Olivia Rodrigo each have 13; Drake has 11; Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran each have nine; The Kid LAROI has eight; and BTS, GIVON, and Taylor Swift each have seven.
The awards will be presented in a live broadcast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on NBC on May 15. It will also be shown live on Peacock.
Doja Cat, Drake, Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift will compete for the title of best artist. Along with GIVON, Masked Wolf, Pooh Shiesty, and The Kid LAROI, Rodrigo is nominated for best new artist, which she won at the Grammys on Sunday.
In addition, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s collaboration on the song “Save Your Tears (Remix)” is nominated for six categories. Meanwhile, the Christian and gospel categories are dominated by the West.
There will be 62 categories to choose from, including five new ones for this year’s show: top Billboard worldwide 200 artist, top Billboard global excl. U.S. artist, top Billboard global 200 song, top Billboard global excl. U.S. song, and top viral song. Sheeran and his song “Bad Habits” are finalists in all four new global artist categories, while “Save Your Tears” and The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber’s “STAY” are finalists in both new global song categories. Both new global artist categories include Rodrigo and The Weeknd as finalists.
A year after being banned from the 2021 BBMAs after being caught on tape uttering a racial slur, country singer Morgan Wallen is up for four awards at this year’s show. Last year, he received three awards, but the finalists were picked primarily on Billboard chart data rather than by a voting committee or membership group, according to BBMA producers. A representative for The Hollywood Reporter has been contacted for comment.
Dangerous: The Double Album is vying for the top Billboard 200 album award, with Adele’s 30, Doja Cat’s Planet Her, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, and Rodrigo’s SOUR.
The BBMAs for this year are based on a chart period from April 10, 2021, to March 26, 2022. Finalists and winners are determined by Billboard and its data partners, including Luminate, based on important fan engagements with music, such as album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement.
The Billboard Music Awards are produced by MRC Live & Alternative, a branch of MRC, which owns The Hollywood Reporter in a joint venture called P-MRC with Penske Media. The BBMAs’ executive producer is Robert Deaton.
