Hungary’s general elections saw national Prime Minister Viktor Orban claiming his victory after his party got a big lead after partial results. With 94% of votes counted, Orban’s Fidesz party had 53% votes. While, opposition alliance which is led by Peter Marki-Zay laid far behind with 35% votes.
Orban addressed his supporters and said, “This was a huge victory. They can see it from the Moon, but certainly from Brussels as well.”
He added: “We never had so many opponents,” citing “Brussels bureaucrats… the international mainstream media, and finally the Ukrainian president”.
Mr Orban, has had a tense relationship with the EU throughout these years. EU considers that Fidesz has undermined Hungary’s democratic institutions, the BBC’s Nick Thorpe in Budapest reports.
Hungary also shares a border with war-torn Ukraine. They have taken in more than half a million Ukrainian refugees so far. Hungary helped the refugees but refused to supply weapons to them.
This election victory will be Fidesz’s fourth successive since 2010.
