UKRAINIAN forces have claimed to have downed another Russian fighter jet with the remnants seen burning in a field.
The SU-35, which costs £38million, was brought down near the city of Izyum, in the Kharkiv region, according to local news outlet Nexta.
According to MP Anton Gerashchenko, the pilot ejected and was apprehended as he attempted to leave.
Authorities in Ukraine claim to have shot down two planes and one helicopter in the last 24 hours.
The strike is another another setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose armed troops are struggling to establish control of Ukraine and are facing stiff opposition.
On March 18, Ukrainian officials stated troops using a shoulder-launched Stinger missile destroyed one SU-34.
A week later, Kyiv officials claimed that another supposed SU-34 was shot down by “mobile” air-defense troops.
According to reports, a Russian SU-25 fighter was shot down over Kharkiv in early March.
As it crashes to the ground, the plane turns into a blaze, much to the joy of Ukrainians watching below.
Oleg Synegubov, regional governor of Kharkiv, declared at the time that his city’s Air Defence Forces had subdued the target with two surface-to-air missiles.
The plane can be seen bursting above Ukraine’s second largest city as crowds applaud before plunging to the earth and exploding again.
The report comes after it was reported that two Russian servicemen died after eating poisoned pies handed to them by Ukrainian people.
The troops from the Third Motor Rifle Division are claimed to have perished quickly after being offered the treats as ‘gifts’ by Izium villagers.
Another 28 Russians were alleged to have been sent to intensive care following the poisoning, with hundreds more said to be suffering from “serious sickness” as a result of the tainted food and drink.
On Saturday, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense Intelligence issued the following statement: “Ukrainians are resisting the occupiers with whatever means at their disposal.
“According to current information, people of the Izium area (Kharkiv region) ‘treated’ Russians from the Russian Federation’s third Motorized Rifle Division with poisoned pies.
“As a result, two occupants died at the same time, and another 28 were admitted to the intensive care unit. Their current situation is being investigated.”
Izium is anticipated to witness further fighting in the coming weeks, as Putin is said to be reorganising his soldiers for conflicts in eastern Ukraine.
It comes after Ukraine declared that it had retaken control of the Kyiv area, with Russian soldiers retreating from the capital and Chernigiv city.
Ukrainian officials said on Saturday that their forces had retaken control of more than 30 towns and villages in the Kyiv area, claiming total control of the capital region for the first time since Russia started its assault.
“The whole Kyiv region has been liberated from the invader,” stated Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor General Iryna Venedyktova said on Sunday that Ukrainian prosecutors probing alleged Russian war crimes had discovered 410 dead in villages surrounding Kyiv, 140 of which had been examined.
Russia refuted reports that its soldiers murdered civilians near Kyiv in the village of Bucha.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of genocide in his nation on Sunday, as Western officials blasted photographs of dead Ukrainian citizens in a hamlet abandoned by Russian soldiers outside Kyiv.
“This is, indeed, genocide. “The annihilation of the entire nation and people,” Zelenskiy said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “Speaking via a translator on a news show
“We are Ukrainian citizens, and we do not want to be subjected to Russian Federation policies. This is why we are being annihilated and exterminated.”
Boris Johnson has slammed Russia’s “despicable strikes” on Ukrainian citizens in Irpin and Bucha, saying that “we will not rest until justice is done.”
According to the Prime Minister, “no denial or misinformation from the Kremlin” can hide the fact that President Vladimir Putin is “desperate” and that “his invasion is failing.”
