According to reports, the president is concerned about rising resistance to the conflict in Ukraine, which has reached the highest levels of the Russian administration. Military authorities are alleged to be enraged by the stuttering invasion as Russian soldiers withdraw from parts of Ukraine, especially close Kyiv.
Russian soldiers have struggled with logistical issues such as refuelling issues and a shortage of supplies, and they have failed to gain control of several important Ukrainian cities, encountering stiff opposition from Ukrainian troops.
Moscow’s military has suffered significant losses as well, with US military intelligence estimating that between 7,000 and 15,000 men have perished since the combat began on February 24.
According to experts, the failing invasion may be fueling discontent within the Kremlin’s senior echelons.
According to veteran broadcaster Andrew Neil, some sources have hinted that a coup might be on the horizon.
According to one Western intelligence source, “it’s hard to anticipate, but these are the traditional indications of an imminent coup.”
With news of Russia’s hardships on the battlefield, opposition to the war has increased within the Russian leadership in recent weeks.
Putin’s military leaders are said to be upset that what was billed to them as a simple foray into Ukraine has turned out to be a destructive and costly struggle that has claimed thousands of lives.
“Dissent has broken out at the highest echelons of the Russian administration,” Mr Neil added. The military high command is enraged that Putin’s ostensibly “walk in the park” has devolved into an expensive and bloody quagmire.
“Disputes are escalating between political leaders, generals, and intelligence organisations about who is to blame and what should be done.”
As the war effort falters, Putin is growing increasingly concerned about this discontent. The Russian president is alleged to be berating Kremlin officials and accusing insiders of treason.
“It’s like Downfall, the German film about Hitler in his bunker,” another person told Mr Neil.
According to US sources, Russia is conducting its military operation from Moscow without a central combat commander on the ground, which may explain some of the confusion that Russian forces are facing on the battlefield.
Seven Russian generals have perished so far, and high-ranking officials are being sent to the front lines to attempt to solve the various challenges that Moscow’s soldiers are facing, while Ukrainian troops have put up a solid fight in defence of their nation.
