Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Queen Mother’s death; the matriarch died at the age of 101 at her Windsor home, The Royal Lodge. She was the widow of King George VI and the mother of the present reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

She was born Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon. Her condition deteriorated as a result of a nasty cough and a chest infection, and she died in her sleep.

Her Majesty expressed herself as “very affected” by the “outpouring of affection” for the Queen Mother in an address delivered on the night of her funeral.

She said: “My family and I always knew what she meant for the people of this country and the special place she occupied in the hearts of so many.

“But the extent of the tribute that huge numbers of you have paid my mother in the last few days has been overwhelming.”

The Queen was said to have been quite close to her mother, especially after King George died.
