Will Smith may be asked to return his first Oscar after slapping Chris Rock, according to Hollywood sources, because he violated The Academy’s code of conduct.
Fans demanded today that Will Smith return the Best Actor award he received for King Richard, which he accepted just moments after slapping Rock.
Fans demanded that the Fresh Prince star return his Oscar after his outburst violated The Oscars’ Code of Conduct, which was written in the aftermath of the MeToo Movement and emphasised the importance of “upholding the Academy’s values” and “respect for human dignity” in 2017.
One person responded on Twitter, saying, “Just imagine if that had been ANYONE other than Will Smith.”
“They would have been hauled away so quickly.” However, we will not be normalising assault in 2022. There is no special treatment. “Remove him from the Oscars.”
A Hollywood source also told the New York Post that Smith’s award could be revoked.
“It’s basically assault,” they said.
“Everyone in the room was just so shocked, it was so uncomfortable.”
“I don’t think Will would want to give up his Oscar, but who knows what will happen now?”
Smith stormed the stage following the ex-SNL comic’s joke about alopecia sufferer Jada Pinkett Smith’s short hair.
Smith, however, was seen giggling at Rock’s remarks moments before his outburst.
“Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2,” Rock said, referring to Pinkett Smith’s buzzcut, prompting the actress to roll her eyes.
Smith, on the other hand, walked up to the stage and appeared to slap Rock before returning to his seat and angrily shouting twice, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.”
“Clearly, Chris Rock is the better man here,” said another on Twitter. Smith’s Oscar should be revoked, and he should be barred from ever participating in the event again.
“This is outrageous behaviour that ruins what was once a classy affair.” Will Smith should be ashamed.”
Another wrote, “Assault on an international live broadcast should be enough to deprive someone of their Oscar.”
Others demanded Smith’s arrest, with one fan asking, “The #Oscars don’t have cops? “How do you assault someone on national television and then return to your seat?”
Another user tweeted: “If it’s not staged, it’s an assault. There are no excuses. Is Will Smith above the law simply because he is wealthy and famous? Consider the outrage if a random person hits Chris Rock during his performance.”
Some defended Smith, citing previous Oscar winners who had served time in prison.
Someone stated: “Sure, let’s make a scapegoat out of the black man. Why do Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein, among many others, still have their Academy Awards despite being found guilty of sexual assault?”
The LAPD said it was “aware” of the incident, which “involved one individual slapping another,” but that “the individual involved has declined to file a police report.”
Following the conclusion of the gala, the Academy tweeted that it “does not condone violence in any form,” without mentioning the incident specifically.
Pinkett Smith, who is also an actress, has alopecia, which she publicly revealed in 2018.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, who was in attendance, a tearful Smith needed to be “pulled aside and comforted” during a commercial break by fellow actors Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry.
Smith, 53, alluded to the chaotic incident in his acceptance speech for best actor, which he received for his role in “King Richard” as the father of tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams.
Smith said, with tears streaming down his cheeks, that “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family” and that “art imitates life.”
“Just like Richard Williams, I appear to be the crazy father. Love, on the other hand, will drive you insane “He continued.
“I’m hoping the Academy will invite me back,” Smith said after apologising to the event’s organisers and fellow nominees.
