Teen was sent home after her outfit made a male teacher ‘uncomfortable,’ and she missed final year of high school as a result

missed final year

Due to stress, a student who was sent home from school for wearing an outfit that made a male teacher feel “awkward” spent her final year of school at home.

When Karis Wilson wore a knee-length black dress with lace trim over a long-sleeve white turtleneck to school, a female teacher said it reminded her of “lingerie” and made a male student teacher feel “awkward.”

The 18-year-old was sent home, and the incident was so upsetting that she did not return to school until the end of the year, when she graduated.

Her father, Christopher Wilson, first spoke out about the incident in a Facebook live video that went viral, garnering over 100,000 views.

“She wasn’t wearing it in a sexual manner,” he told the Daily Star. She wasn’t wearing it to draw attention to herself. She usually dresses in track pants and a hoodie.

“She was in a snowboarding accident about a month ago and couldn’t do anything for a while. She’d begun going to the gym and was feeling better about herself.

“They reacted when she decided to wear a dress and feel good about herself one day.

“She had missed more than a week of school when she said to her father, ‘Dad, I don’t know what to wear to school.’

“She went on to say, ‘Dad, if I wear just my track pants and hoodie, if I wear something comfortable, am I conforming?'”

“‘Am I trying to rub it in their faces if I wear something I feel pretty in?”

Karis, a student at NorKam Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada, has moved on from the incident and begun her university studies.

At the time, her father told CBC News: “(Karis) was told that it might make the male student teacher uncomfortable, and that it might make (her female classroom teacher) uncomfortable because it reminded her of a lingerie outfit.

“When you look at it closely, it’s actually a very modest outfit… “I believe the initial reactions were based on the fact that it had lace.”After complaining to the principal, dad Christopher was told in 2021 that the teacher was “a little bit old school.”

On Tuesday, he said, a teacher pulled Karis out of her class and escorted her to the principal’s office.

He claimed that the principal later told him that the outfit was not inappropriate.

Karis’ classmates participated in a walkout the next day to show their support for her.

“There was a female who was singled out because what she was wearing could make someone in a position of power over her feel uncomfortable,” he said at the time.

“And the more you think about it, the more you say it, the more you realise how absurd this is.”

He first expressed his displeasure with the incident in a live Facebook video that went viral, garnering over 75,000 views.

And now, in 2022, Christopher told the Daily Star that his daughter was certain that if she could go back in time and change anything, she would do the same thing again.
