Judge Penney Azarte disagreed with the position of Johnny Depp, ruling that the ex-wife could not use Virginia’s Anti-SLAPP (strategic litigation against public participation) statute in her $100 million countersuits.

Heard filed the case after accusing her ex-husband of domestic abuse and emotional distress in a letter.

“I became a public figure representing domestic abuse,” she wrote in the polarizing article. “And I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”
