On Thursday, Ukraine celebrated the destruction of a Russian warship transporting military supplies to invading forces.
“The day begins with good news!” Ukraine’s armed forces gloated as they shared videos and photos of the Orsk, a still-burning landing ship.
“The occupiers are on fire!” The message boasted just days after Russia hailed the arrival of the warship with military supplies as a “epic event.”
Aerial footage showed huge plumes of black smoke billowing over the Azov Sea from the docks in Berdyansk, which Ukraine claims Russia has “captured.”
The flames erupted as the ship sat near at least two others, though it was unclear whether the damage had spread beyond the Orsk.
H.I. Sutton, a defence analyst and author, speculated that the Alligator-class ship was destroyed by a “ballistic missile strike.” He tweeted that two other ships were seen “sailing away as fire raged.”
The Orsk arrived in Berdyansk on Monday, a port about 60 miles from Mariupol, the city that has been subjected to the war’s most heinous assaults.
According to state-run news agency TASS, a Russian officer described its arrival as “an epic event that opens up opportunities” for bringing supplies.
“The large landing craft of the Black Sea Fleet has arrived and is unloading armoured personnel vehicles that will reinforce our grouping in front of your eyes,” the officer said of the now-destroyed ship, which can transport up to 1,500 tonnes of equipment and cargo.
