NEWLYWED Andrew Harper was killed on the job as a police officer less than a month after his wedding.
Since his killers were charged with manslaughter, his wife, Lissie Harper, 30, has been fighting for a new law.
Who was PC Andrew Harper?
Harper was an English cop who was tragically killed in July 2019, just weeks after his wedding to Lissie Beckett.
Harper was attempting to stop three teenagers from stealing a four-wheeler bike when his ankles became entangled in a vehicle’s towrope.
He was dragged for more than a mile while the teens drove at up to 60 mph.
During the trial, jurors were told that the cop would have been rendered unconscious almost immediately, which meant he would not have been able to free himself.
When did he die?
On August 15, 2019, three teenagers – Henry Long, 19, Jessie Cole, 18, and Albert Bowers, 18 – stole a quad bike.
When PC Harper arrived on the scene, he became entangled in a tow rope on their getaway vehicle.
At a trial, jurors were told that the car was travelling at “breakneck speed” when it struck Harper “like a pendulum.”
He was dragged behind the car for about a mile at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
Who are the three suspects Henry Long, Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole?
Harper was dragged behind the three teenagers in the car.
Long, who was 19 at the time, was driving the car, and Bowers and Cole, both 18, were passengers.
Prior to the incident, CCTV footage showed the teens driving around looking for something to steal.
During their trial, the jury heard Long tell his passengers to “turn on the music” as Harper was being dragged behind the vehicle.
While driving away, he allegedly yelled at his passengers to be quiet.
During the trial, Long stated that he did not hear or notice anything behind the car.
Were there any charges in the cop’s death?
Long was initially charged with murder and theft conspiracy.
On the day the charges were filed on September 18, 2019, Long stated, “I don’t give a f*** about any of this.”
All three teenagers denied committing murder.
During a trial, Long admitted to killing the officer and said it made him feel “disgraceful.”
The 19-year-old admitted to manslaughter.
After two days of deliberation, the jury found Cole and Bowers guilty of manslaughter.
Long was sentenced to 16 years in prison, while the two passengers received 13 years.
The boys were seen laughing and smirking during their trial at London’s Old Bailey.
Bowers even dozed off as lawyers played video of the incident.
What has his wife said?
Lissie, Harper’s heartbroken widow, said she now faces her “own life sentence” after the teens were acquitted of murder.
She called her late husband’s killers “senseless, barbaric, and brutal” and described him as “selfless, beautiful, and heroic.”
Lissie sobbed after the teens were acquitted of murder, saying she was “immensely disappointed” with the outcome.
Since the trial, she has advocated for Harper’s Law in the United Kingdom, which the government has also supported.
Anyone found guilty of unlawfully killing an emergency service worker would face a life sentence under the law.
“I pledge to my late husband that I will never stop until I have made the difference that this country so desperately needs,” she said.
“I pledge to stand strong and firm with so many other honourable people in our country to bring about the changes that we clearly know are warranted.”
Two years later, on what would have been Andrew’s 30th birthday, she said it was still surreal to her that he was gone.
