Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, has challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to a fight over Ukraine in an early morning Twitter post that included invasion memes and references to Macbeth.
Musk tweeted Monday, ‘I hereby challenge Vladimir Putin to single combat,’ typing Putin’s name in Russian. ‘The stakes are Ukraine,’ he added, writing the name of the country in Ukrainian.
The apparent challenge was part of a flurry of tweets sent out by Musk, 50, over the course of three hours, including the line, ‘By the pricking of my thumbs…,’ which is followed by the phrase, ‘Something wicked this way comes,’ from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
In another tweet, he shared a meme of a Narcos character sitting on a porch swing with the caption, ‘Netflix waiting for the war to end to make a movie about a black Ukrainian guy falling in love with a transgender Russian soldier.’
At the request of Ukrainian officials, the South African billionaire has been providing internet access to Ukraine via his Starlink satellite service.
While it’s unclear what prompted Monday’s tweets, rapper Azealia Banks previously accused Musk of tweeting while high on the psychedelic drug LSD, which Musk denied.
Musk concluded his challenge by making a direct reference to the Kremlin.
‘Do you agree to this fight?’ he wrote on Twitter, tagging the Kremlin’s official account.
He had earlier posted the cryptic message, ‘There is a beauty to the biological substrate,’ on Monday.
Musk, who is estimated to be worth $218.9 billion, mocked Russian officials earlier this month as the US stepped up sanctions against Russia in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine.
‘In a situation like this, we can’t supply the United States with our best rocket engines in the world.’ Let them fly on something else, I don’t know what, their broomsticks,’ Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia’s space agency, said on state Russian television on March 3.
On the same day, Musk tweeted a link to a successful SpaceX launch, followed by the words “American Broomstick” and emojis of the American flag.
Late last month, the entrepreneur responded to a request from Ukraine’s vice prime minister, who asked the tycoon to assist the embattled country with satellite internet access.
‘@elonmusk, while you’re attempting to colonise Mars, Russia is attempting to occupy Ukraine!’ Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civilians while your rockets successfully land in space! We request that you provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and address sane Russians to stand,’ Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said in a tweet.
His appeal came as a portion of Ukraine was left without internet access after three days of Russian rocket attacks.
Locals are encouraged to stay connected so that their stories can be used to counter Russian propaganda, as well as to share atrocities committed by Russian troops on behalf of Vladimir Putin.
Musk returned the call the next day and stated that he would be sending Starlink receivers to the country.
The ‘Starlink’ service is now operational in Ukraine. ‘More terminals on the way,’ Musk tweeted hours after the unusual request.
Starlink is a space-based system that SpaceX has been developing for years in order to provide internet access to underserved areas around the world.
During a video call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on March 5, Musk assured him that SpaceX will send more Starlink satellite stations.
The embattled country’s president took to Twitter to thank Musk for his assistance and invited the tech billionaire to visit Ukraine once the war is over.
‘I spoke with @elonmusk. I’m grateful to him for his words and actions in support of Ukraine. ‘We’ll get another batch of Starlink systems for destroyed cities next week,’ Zelensky wrote on the social media platform.
Musk, who has said he ‘looks forward to visiting Ukraine when the war is over,’ sent a collection of antennas to Ukraine earlier this month after Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed concern that if Russia continues to attack communications towers, as it did with the bombing of a Kyiv TV tower, Ukrainians may lose internet access.
Musk admitted to seeing Azealia Banks in 2018, despite the rapper’s claims that she spent a bizarre weekend at his LA home watching him have a meltdown over his ‘drug-induced’ tweets.
The Tesla CEO told the New York Times that he ran into the rapper after working out early in the morning.
