SHC issues arrest warrants against two acting VCs of universities

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday issued bailable arrest warrants of acting Vice Chancellors (VCs) of two public universities who despite court’s order did not hand over the charge to permanent VCs, who were sent on 45-day forced leave by the Sindh government.

A two-member bench, headed by Justice Aftab Ahmed Garor, had on March 8 suspended the notifications of the Sindh government sending VC of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) Larkana, Dr Anila Rheman, and VC Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (SBBUVAS) Sukrand, Muhammad Farooq Hassan, on 45 days’ forced leave over allegations of financial irregularities and misconduct.

However, the court declaring that the charges against the VCs, who had filed constitutional petition, had yet to be proven, had allowed them to continue their assignment as VCs.

The bench was informed on Monday that the acting VC of SMBBMU, Hakim Abro and acting VC of SBBUVAS, Ahmed Sultan had refused to leave the charge and hand it over to the permanent VCs. The bench expressing its dismay over non-compliance of its order, issued their bailable warrants of arrest with directions to SSPs of Larkana and Shaheed Benziarabad to take necessary action against them.
