Typhoon Phanfone: Death toll reaches 47 in the Philippines

The death toll from destructive Typhoon Phanfone has risen to 47 in Philippines. Another nine people are still not found, officials reported.

Typhoon Phanfone had made landfall by bringing heavy rain and storm in Eastern Samar province. The storm has hit the country on Christmas Eve.

Typhoon Phanfone is locally called Ursula.

It hit with winds speed of 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour, with breezes of 195 kph.

The typhoon led to huge destruction and brought a lot of debris when it swept west towards the islands of the Eastern Visayas region, southern Luzon, and the western Visayas on Christmas day.

According to the Philippine Natural Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRMC), around two million people were affected, over 378,000 houses were collapsed. Apart from that, 143 people were also injured.

NDRRMC also informed that Typhoon Phanfone became a reason for a huge loss of $21.3 million due to damage to infrastructure and agriculture.

Apart from that, 116 domestic flights and 3 international flights were canceled in the country. It is because the roof of the terminal building was also damaged, advisory from Philippine airlines reported.

Philippines’s famous resort Island of Boracay and other tourists’ areas were badly affected due to the typhoon.
