Punjab govt to establish directorate to combat drug use in school

LAHORE: Punjab Law Minister Mohammad Basharat Raja informed on Monday that the provincial government has decided to set up a directorate to combat rising drug use in academic facilities, said a press release issued by the Punjab Assembly.

Speaking in the house, the minister made the announcement in reply to a query from Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi.

“Drugs are being sold openly in the schools, colleges and universities and no action is being taken, what measures the government is taking for elimination of drugs from the educational institutions,” the speaker remarked in the session.

Speaker Elahi further said that the federal and provincial governments should take joint action to address the rising drugs menace in the educational institutions.

Meanwhile, the speaker also allowed Pakistan Muslim League’s MPA Khadeeja Umar to present her resolution about recitation of Holy Quran and Darood Sharif in educational institutions prior to the national anthem during assembly.  The resolution was unanimously adopted.

The session was adjourned till tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. The legislators are scheduled to meet at 11:30am.
