Conspiracy being hatched against judiciary, says SCBA president Ahsan Bhoon

LAHORE: Supreme Court Bar Association President Ahsan Bhoon claimed that a conspiracy was being hatched against the judiciary, adding that judges’ confidence would not be restored unless people started trusting the institution.

Talking to media persons in his office, Bhoon called the issue of the alleged audio recording of former chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar pre-mature and expressed his inability to comment on it.

Bhoon said that the position of Justice Saqib Nisar has come to the fore and he denied it.

He refuted the government’s accusation of making the Asma Jahangir conference controversial, saying there was no controversy in the conference but rather a healthy debate took place.

“Asma Jahangir always spoke for human interest,” said Bhoon. He added that lawyers of the country have always worked for democracy.

On Nawaz Sharif’s speech at the conference, Bhoon said that if a person is not allowed to speak then how is it possible for him or her to explain his position.

He pointed out that everyone has the right to criticise within the law but not under a conspiracy.

“Nawaz Sharif’s speech was obstructed which should not have happened,” said the SCBA president.

“We also criticise certain decisions of the apex court, as well as the appointment of judges, but we will not allow any negative speculation about our supreme judiciary,” said the lawyer. He said that the lawyers had always advocated for the right of the opposing group to listen and respond.

Responding to a question, Bhoon announced that he would approach the Supreme Court to lift the lifelong disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, adding that if it is applied on the PML-N supremo then 260 such parliamentarians would also get disqualified. He said no one could be disqualified for life.

“Right of appeal should be given in suo motu cases and if the same was not granted, it would be a violation of the law,” said Bhoon. He added that the bar council has asked the chief justice to amend the rules and grant the right of appeal.
