India releases Mehbooba Mufti after 14 months

Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Indian-Occupied Kashmir, has been freed by Indian authorities after a year of detention.

Mehbooba Mufti was arrested on August 5 last year when the Indian government enforced a lockdown in IOK after the controversial law.

She was allowed to be imprisoned without charge for up to two years.

Mehbooba’s daughter announced the news on Twitter. She thanked everyone for the support. She tweeted from her mother’s account, “As Ms. Mufti’s illegal detention finally comes to an end, I’d like to thank everybody who supported me in these tough times.”

It should be remembered that the Indian government had reportedly arrested thousands of other people last year – including activists, local politicians, and businessmen after it enforced controversial citizenship law.

Ms. Mufti shared a video message on Twitter in which she asked for the release of all the imprisoned.
