Heavy rainfall triggers flash floods in Gujrat

LAHORE: Gujrat witnessed massive destruction as torrential rains triggered flash floods, submerging several villages and leaving urban areas waterlogged.

According to the Gujranwala Commissioner, the city received 577 millimeters of rainfall within 24 hours, causing streams and storm drains to overflow. Floodwaters inundated agricultural lands, damaging standing crops and displacing residents in low-lying villages.

Urban flooding wreaked havoc across Gujrat city, with water accumulating in streets, markets, and key institutions. Rainwater entered the District Jail and the premises of the Sessions Court, forcing the authorities to transfer several inmates to prisons in Lahore and Gujranwala.

Officials confirmed that rescue and relief operations are underway, while efforts are being made to drain water from affected areas.

Commissioner Gujranwala said that the water is being diverted in a rainstorm near Medina Sayedan, and machinery, vehicles have also been sent from Gujranwala for drainage of water.

Due to the rains, educational institutions across the district will be closed today.

On the other hand, the second largest flood in the river Chenab is flowing towards the Trimmau Headworks.
