Pakistan Railways has announced plans to launch a high-speed bullet train between Karachi and Lahore, marking a major step forward for the country’s transport sector.

Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi said the service is expected to start by 2030. The 1,215-kilometer rail line will be part of the Karachi-to-Peshawar Main Line-1 (ML-1), which is being upgraded under the CPEC project at an estimated cost of $6.8 billion.

Reports say a new train running between Karachi and Lahore will reach speeds of 250 kilometers per hour, stopping at Hyderabad, Multan, and Sahiwal.

The project will be carried out with help from China, with China Railway Construction Corporation taking part. As part of the plan, the railway’s double track will be upgraded, new bridges will be built, and a modern signaling system will be added.

Earlier, it was also reported that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to provide $2 billion in financing to upgrade the railway line from Karachi to Rohri.
