Hegseth fires head of Defense Intelligence Agency, Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has dismissed Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), marking the latest high-level departure in what sources are calling a sweeping overhaul of national security leadership.

Two individuals familiar with the decision confirmed Kruse’s removal, which follows tensions with the White House over the DIA’s preliminary assessment of recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The agency concluded that the strikes had delayed Tehran’s nuclear program by only a few months—directly contradicting President Donald Trump’s public claims that the attacks had “completely destroyed” Iran’s capabilities.

The intelligence estimate reportedly infuriated Trump and led to mounting pressure on Hegseth, who assumed the role of Defense Secretary earlier this year, to take disciplinary action.

Kruse had led the DIA since early 2024 and previously served as a senior military adviser to the Director of National Intelligence. He also held key intelligence roles during operations against the Islamic State.

In addition to Kruse, two other senior officers—Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore, chief of the Navy Reserve, and Rear Admiral Milton Sands, commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command—are also being removed from their posts, a U.S. official confirmed on condition of anonymity.

The moves are part of what multiple insiders are describing as a broader “purge” of top military and intelligence leaders perceived as insufficiently aligned with the Trump administration’s national security posture.

The Pentagon and White House have yet to issue official statements on the personnel changes.
