Nanotechnology can help address environmental challenges

KARACHI: Experts and academicians, speaking at an international congress, highlighted the significance of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for the substantial growth and development of Pakistan, noting that these fields can help address many global challenges and pressing issues, including environmental concerns.

Speakers observed that the recent wars between Iran and Israel, and between Pakistan and India, have underscored the importance of technology in modern times. They stressed that young minds can accelerate progress in science and technology, which is vital for the sustainable socio-economic development of the country.

These remarks were made during the inaugural session of the three-day 1st International Congress on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICNN-1), held at the Prof. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui Auditorium, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, on Monday.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Khalid Iraqi, emphasized the importance of adopting world-class technologies, noting that the Iran–Israel and Pakistan–India conflicts have shown that technological superiority often determines victory. To reinforce the idea that science and education are indispensable, he cited the example of China, where the government allocates a significant share of GDP to education.

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman said that the future must remain the focus of social planning. That is why the National Commission on Nano Science and Technology (NCNST) was established in Pakistan 20 years ago to promote and develop nanotechnology.

Shadia Abdullah said that ICNN-1 has brought together over 600 participants from across the world, creating a vibrant hub for the exchange of cutting-edge research and innovative ideas.

Prof. Muhammad Raza Shah said that nanotechnology is a cutting-edge discipline that has garnered significant global attention in recent times because it operates at the nanoscale. He added that the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry has made phenomenal progress, becoming an academic and research ecosystem that not only supports the ICCBS but also benefits other institutions in the country.

Prof. Iqbal Choudhary also highlighted the key features of the LEJ Nanotechnology Center at the ICCBS, stating that nanotechnology is not only a cutting-edge field but also a driving force for innovation with the potential to solve some of the most pressing global challenges, including environmental issues.

Ms. Samman Aziz Jamal said that since its inception, the H.E.J. Foundation has contributed to the establishment of various centers of excellence, while the LEJ National Science Information Center and the LEJ Nanotechnology Center—constructed under the direct supervision of Mr. Aziz Latif Jamal—stand as cornerstones of modern scientific research in Pakistan.

Younus Khan, former Captain of the Pakistan National Cricket Team, said he felt truly humbled to be among such esteemed scientists and dignitaries from across the world.
