LONDON: Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, has passed away at the age of 114, British media reported.
Singh, who hailed from India, was involved in a traffic accident near his village close to Jalandhar, according to the reports.
Born on April 1, 1911, as per his passport Fauja Singh embarked on his running career relatively late in life, at the age of 89, after moving to London. He etched his name in history as the only runner in the world to complete a marathon at 100 years old, becoming a beacon of inspiration for countless individuals globally.
Singh’s impressive achievements include completing the 2011 Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 8 hours and 11 minutes. The following year, in 2012 at the age of 101, he conquered the London Marathon in a swift 7 hours and 49 minutes.
Beyond these iconic races, Fauja Singh held numerous records in the 90-plus age category, consistently proving that age is merely a number when it comes to passion and perseverance.
