From mystery to motherhood

CHINA: In a rare and astonishing incident, a woman in central China gave birth to a baby boy just an hour after arriving at the hospital—completely unaware she had been  expected pregnant for the past nine months.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the surprising event took place in Ezhou, a city in China’s Hubei province. The woman reportedly drove herself to the hospital on an electric bike after experiencing stomach pain following lunch.

Upon examination, doctors informed her that she was in labor. Within an hour, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Such cases are extremely rare and are said to occur in roughly one in several million pregnancies, where the expectant mother remains unaware of her condition until delivery.

The report said that the woman named Lee (her full name was not disclosed) had severe stomach pain after lunch and she felt that it was the result of a diligence.

The woman had visited the hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain. When doctors conducted an ultrasound, they were surprised to discover she was pregnant. As signs of imminent delivery became clear, a full medical team was quickly assembled.

At exactly 3:22 PM, she delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 2.5 kilograms. Following the birth, she was transferred to a municipal health center for further observation.

Speaking to local media, the woman said, “I was in complete shock when doctors told me I was pregnant.” She revealed that this is her second child — her first son is six years old. She and her husband had not planned for more children and had taken precautions to avoid pregnancy.

Although she had noticed a slight weight gain in recent months, she experienced none of the typical signs of pregnancy and continued with her daily routine — including regularly riding an electric bike.

Her husband, who works in another city, rushed home upon hearing the news of the unexpected birth.
