National Stadium Karachi renovation nears completion ahead of ICC Champions Trophy

The renovation of the National Stadium Karachi for the ICC Champions Trophy is in its final phase, with officials assuring completion by January 31 after multiple deadline extensions. The stadium will host three matches during the tournament, starting February 19.

Key Renovation Updates

Infrastructure Upgrades

  • A five-story building is nearing completion, featuring ICC Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping units, physio rooms, and match officials’ rooms.
  • Dressing rooms on the second floor are in the final stages, while 24 hospitality boxes across the third and fourth floors, with a capacity for 1,000 people, are almost ready.
  • The Chairman’s Box and Admin Block on the fifth floor will be finished shortly.

Enhanced Facilities

  • VIP pavilions, modern player entry pathways, and comfortable spectator seating with chairs from Gaddafi Stadium are being installed.
  • Digital scoreboards and LED floodlights similar to those in Australia and South Africa are being set up for improved visuals and lighting.

Safety and Accessibility

  • A 10-foot iron fence around the ground will enhance security.
  • A pedestrian bridge for fans and parking space for 2,700 vehicles are being added, pending ICC approval.

Impact on Domestic Matches

Ongoing renovations led to the relocation of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final and the first Test against the West Indies to alternate venues.

The PKR 3.5 billion project aims to meet international standards, ensuring a world-class experience for players and spectators. Officials remain optimistic about meeting the January 31 deadline and hosting a successful Champions Trophy.
