Sri Lanka reappoints Amarasuriya as prime minister

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reappointed Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister of the island nation on Monday.

Following his coalition’s landslide victory, securing 159 out of 225 parliamentary seats in the general election, Dissanayake also reinstated seasoned politician Vijitha Herath as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

However, Dissanayake did not appoint a new finance minister during the swearing-in ceremony, suggesting he plans to retain the critical portfolio himself, as he has done since winning the presidential election in September.

A political outlier in a nation long dominated by dynastic politics, Dissanayake secured a decisive presidential win in September, appointing Amarasuriya as Prime Minister and Herath to oversee foreign affairs. At that time, his left-leaning National People’s Power (NPP) coalition held only three parliamentary seats, leading him to dissolve parliament and call for fresh elections, held last Thursday.

With a resounding mandate, Dissanayake now has the legislative authority to implement his agenda aimed at combating poverty and corruption, key challenges for the country as it recovers from a devastating economic collapse.

Sri Lanka, a nation of 22 million, was battered by an economic crisis in 2022 caused by a severe foreign currency shortage, leading to sovereign default and an economic contraction of 7.3% in 2022 and 2.3% the following year.

While the strong electoral mandate bolsters political stability, uncertainty persists regarding policy direction, particularly as Dissanayake has pledged to renegotiate terms of the IMF bailout that helped the country navigate its financial crisis, according to analysts.
