- A lump the size of a golf ball was discovered in his groin area within a week of illness.
Dave Coulier opened up about his cancer diagnosis and how he discovered it. The actor, best known for portraying Joey Gladstone on the hit show “Full House”, discussed his experience during a recent conversation with “Today”.
He told the outlet that doctors diagnosed him with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that begins in the lymphatic system.
Coulier shared with the outlet that he first felt the symptoms about a month ago. He explained that he had a cold and had previously noticed his lymph nodes swelling in his neck or armpits when he was sick.
This time, when he fell ill, he discovered a lump the size of a golf ball in his groin area within a week of getting sick. He mentioned that it swelled up quickly, sharing the details during a phone interview with the publication.
The actor recalled thinking, “Wow, I’m either sick or my body’s reacting to something.’” He visited the hospital to check it out and they ran a few tests, including EKG, bloodwork, PET, and CT scans.
When he received the results, nothing alarming stood out, as everything seemed normal, except when the doctors biopsied his lymph nodes. The biopsy results revealed the cancer diagnosis.
The actor shared that his doctors expressed their wish to deliver good news but instead informed him that he had “non-Hodgkin lymphoma, B-cell lymphoma,” which shocked him.
Amid such a scary situation, Coulier managed to keep things light and used laughter as his best medicine. He joked with the publication, saying, “In four short weeks, I’ve gone from a Virgo to a Cancer,” and added, “I’ve tried to retain a sense of reality but also a sense of humor about it.”
During his November 13 appearance on “Today”, Coulier recalled the moment he had to deliver the news to his wife, Melissa. He shared that he had contemplated how to tell her.
When Coulier told Melissa, she initially thought he was joking. However, once he confirmed he was serious, she took charge, organizing his entire life, including his nutrition, medications, and doctor appointments.
