In 2023, Greece emerged as one of the most popular Schengen Area destinations, with a significant number of visa applications submitted. According to reports, Greece received over 627,000 visa applications, accounting for more than 6% of all Schengen visa requests this year.
High Demand for Greece Visa
Greece’s rising popularity as a travel destination attracted applicants from various parts of the world. Turkish citizens accounted for the largest portion of applicants, submitting over 254,000 applications, which represented 40.5% of the total. Russian and Chinese nationals followed with 62,959 and 35,931 applications, respectively. This trend underscores Greece’s appeal, especially to travellers from neighboring countries and further afield.
While demand for Greek visas soared, the rejection rates varied significantly depending on the applicant’s nationality. Countries in Africa and Asia, in particular, experienced the highest visa refusal rates.
Top 5 Countries with the Highest Greece Visa Rejection Rates in 2023
- Pakistan – Out of 560 visa applications, 65.54% were denied, making Pakistan the country with the highest visa rejection rate.
- Algeria – Algerian applicants faced a 59.54% rejection rate, with 1,230 out of 2,066 applications turned down.
- Tunisia – Tunisia saw a 56.36% rejection rate, with 1,564 visa applications being denied.
- Senegal – Senegalese applicants had a 56.25% rejection rate, despite a smaller total of 240 applications.
- Iraq – Iraqis submitted 3,568 visa applications, with 49.22% facing rejection.
The high rejection rates for applicants from Pakistan, Algeria, Tunisia, and other African and Asian countries may point to Greece’s stringent visa approval process. This suggests that the country has stricter security measures and eligibility criteria for applicants from certain regions.
