ISLAMABAD: The current government has decided to introduce a bill in the National Assembly to increase the number of Supreme Court (SC) judges, sources report.
The bill is expected to be presented in the lower house of Parliament on Friday. If passed, the number of SC judges would rise to 23, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).
Notably, PML-N’s Barrister Danyal Chaudhary has already introduced this bill. To facilitate its passage, the National Assembly session, originally set to conclude on Tuesday, has been extended until Friday.
Sources also indicate that discussions are underway regarding amendments to the Practice and Procedure Act. Previously, the government passed the 26th amendment to Pakistan’s constitution to revise the appointment process for the CJP and establish a fixed three-year term for the position.
