ISLAMABAD: Justice Yahya Afridi, the designated Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), on Wednesday held separate meetings with the current CJP, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, and senior judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, in their chambers.

Sources indicate that the two judges met in Justice Isa’s chamber, where the CJP congratulated Justice Afridi on his upcoming appointment.

Justice Afridi also visited the chamber of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, where Shah’s staff extended their congratulations to him.

Earlier in the day, President Arif Alvi approved the appointment of Justice Afridi as the next CJP on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following the recommendation of a special parliamentary committee.

Justice Yahya Afridi will assume the role of Chief Justice of Pakistan for a three-year term starting October 26. His appointment is in accordance with Articles 175A (3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution.

Justice Afridi began his legal career by enrolling as an advocate in the high court in 1990 and later in the Supreme Court in 2004.

He previously served as Assistant Advocate General for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and as Federal Counsel for the Government of Pakistan.

In 2010, he was appointed as an Additional Judge in the Peshawar High Court and was confirmed as a full judge in 2012. In December 2016, he became the first judge from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to hold the position of Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court. He remained in this role until June 2018, when he was elevated to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
