Israel’s national security council issued a warning on Wednesday, urging Israelis to leave certain tourist spots in southern Sri Lanka due to a possible terrorist threat.
The warning specifically mentioned Arugam Bay and beach areas in the south and west, based on information about a potential attack targeting tourists.
While the exact nature of the threat was not disclosed, Israelis across Sri Lanka were advised to stay cautious and avoid large public gatherings.
The Israeli security council is in contact with Sri Lankan authorities and is closely monitoring the situation.
Similarly, the U.S. embassy in Sri Lanka released a security alert, advising U.S. citizens to avoid the Arugam Bay area, citing credible information about an attack threat.
In response, Sri Lankan police have increased security in the area, with officials on high alert. The popular surfing destination has attracted many Israeli tourists, and authorities are taking steps to ensure their safety.
Sri Lanka is experiencing a tourist boom as it recovers from a severe economic crisis.
From January to August, 1.5 million tourists visited the country, including over 20,000 from Israel, according to government data.
