President Zardari gives assent to 26th Constitutional Amendment

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has given his assent to ‘The Constitution (26th Amendment) Bill, 2024’ turning it into an Act.

After Presidential assent, The Constitution (26th Amendment) Act, 2024 has been notified in the Gazette of Pakistan.

Earlier, the National Assembly and Senate approved a bill with a two-thirds majority, establishing a three-year term for the Chief Justice of Pakistan. A 12-member parliamentary committee will be responsible for selecting the new Chief Justice from a pool of the three most senior judges.

As per the constitutional amendment, the Chief Justice’s term has been set at three years. The same 12-member committee, which includes eight National Assembly members and four Senate members, will recommend a nominee to the Prime Minister, who will then submit the name to the President for final approval.

Additionally, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, chaired by the Chief Justice and composed of three senior judges, two representatives each from the National Assembly and Senate, the Federal Minister for Law and Justice, the Attorney General, and a nominee from the Pakistan Bar Council with at least 15 years of Supreme Court practice, will oversee the appointment of Supreme Court judges.
