According to Haalvsh, a human rights organization based in Iran, at least 260 Afghan migrants were allegedly killed on Sunday evening when Iranian forces opened fire near the Kalgan border crossing. Survivors described a terrifying attack by the Iranian military on the group.
Haalvsh reported that two survivors indicated around 300 migrants were trying to cross the border when they were fired upon and targeted with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). The organization added that dozens were injured during the assault.
In a statement, Haalvsh said, “On Sunday evening, dozens of Afghan migrants were ambushed near the Kalgan-Saravan border by the Islamic Republic’s military forces, who attacked with direct gunfire and RPGs. Many were killed, and numerous others sustained injuries.”
Images shared by survivors showed that many of the migrants suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Iranian authorities have not yet responded to the incident.
