Political talks on constitutional reforms needed, says FAFEN

The Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) has called on political parties in Pakistan to engage in open and comprehensive discussions on proposed constitutional reforms.

FAFEN pointed out that the country’s current political instability is linked to flaws in the constitution and urged immediate reforms to enhance the legislative, electoral, and local government systems. The organization emphasized the need for broad amendments to empower Parliament as the primary defender of public interests.

The proposed reforms focus on strengthening parliamentary authority, ensuring that Parliament plays a key role in upholding citizens’ fundamental rights. FAFEN also suggested increasing transparency in the appointment of constitutional officeholders and empowering the Election Commission to oversee elections for all such positions.

Moreover, the organization recommended addressing issues of representation in the electoral system, proposing that the Election Commission be given authority to manage Senate elections to avoid disputes like the one in 2021.

FAFEN urged political parties to set aside personal and group interests in favor of the larger national interest, stressing that a strong, independent Parliament is crucial for protecting democracy and citizens’ rights.

The organization underscored the importance of consensus on these reforms to ensure political stability and promote good governance in Pakistan.
