Heavy rains, strong winds sweep through many parts of Karachi

KARACHI: Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, swept through parts of Karachi on Monday night as the Meteorological Office predicted potential showers in Sindh province from August 27 to 31.

Malir Cantt and nearby areas experienced rain showers with gusty winds, while thunderstorms, strong winds, and drizzle were recorded around the airport. Light to heavy rainfall, coupled with strong winds, affected various parts of the city, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Tariq Road, PECHS, F B Area, Bufferzone, and I I Chundrigar Road. Some areas of Defence also received rain.

Earlier, during a meeting on rain emergency measures chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the Met Chief Sardar Sarfaraz informed that the port city could receive between 150mm to 200mm of rainfall during the new weather spell, according to an official statement from the Sindh CM House.

The Met chief also warned of wind thunderstorms, with scattered heavy to isolated very heavy rainfall expected during this period.

Urban flooding and rain inundation in Karachi and other major cities of Sindh are also anticipated due to the torrential downpours.

In response to these forecasts, CM Murad instructed all local bodies, district administrations, and the irrigation department to be on alert and ready for any emergencies.

He also directed the Fisheries Department to advise fishermen to take necessary precautions during this forecast period.
