Early Monday, a fire engulfed an apartment building in east London, sending thick black smoke into the air and sending two people to the hospital for medical treatment.

The London Fire Brigade reported the fire at 2:44 a.m., affecting the entire building, including the scaffolding surrounding the property and the roof.

The authorities have evacuated the building, and a significant search and rescue operation is underway. The London Ambulance Service reported treating four people at the scene, with two being taken to the hospital.

About 40 fire engines and 225 firefighters responded to the blaze at the building, which houses both residential and commercial units. The authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
