LAHORE: Former Inspector General of Prisons, Shahid Saleem Baig, has been arrested from his official residence in Lahore, sources said. Baig held the position of IG Prisons for five years.
Sources also report that former Deputy Superintendent Zafar and DIG Prisons Rawalpindi Office Superintendent Nazim Ali Shah are under investigation.
Baig, who served in the prison department for five years, retired before the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The inquiry into the operations at Adiala Jail has intensified, with several employees being scrutinized for allegedly providing unauthorized access to the PTI founder while in jail.
Previously, the former Deputy Superintendent of Adiala Jail was arrested on charges of assisting former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Sources further revealed that the transferred Central Jail Rawalpindi Deputy Superintendent (Executive) Malik Mohammad Akram, along with two other officials, have been detained for questioning.
It’s worth noting that in 2022, the Punjab government announced the early retirement of Inspector General of Prisons Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig, two months before his official retirement age.
The notification from the Punjab Services & General Administration Department stated that Baig, holding his pay and scale, would retire from government service on October 20, 2022, upon reaching the age of superannuation.
