ISLAMABAD: Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, announced plans to launch Kisan TV, a channel dedicated to helping farmers combat the effects of climate change.

In a statement on Sunday, she explained that this innovative channel aims to educate farmers on climate adaptation, disaster management, and sustainable practices to reduce environmental degradation.

The channel will utilize Pakistan Television (PTV) to broadcast programs in six regional languages, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive timely and relevant information. These programs will be aired through local PTV stations at the provincial level, maximizing their reach and effectiveness.

Alam also mentioned engaging with a private channel to amplify the Climate Ministry’s initiatives, promoting clean and green projects. She emphasized the crucial role of media in improving climate change coverage and reshaping journalistic priorities.

Kisan TV will provide farmers with essential information and guidance on adapting to climate-related challenges, including weather alerts for proactive measures.

The channel will also highlight initiatives for women’s income generation, gender empowerment, and environmental sustainability.

The government aims to empower farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to build resilience against climate change, leveraging media’s power. Media teams from climate change departments and TV initiatives will collaborate to protect the farming community from the socio-economic impacts of climate change.

In meetings held in June regarding global heatwaves and floods, Alam instructed relevant institutions to strengthen media teams to keep vulnerable communities informed about climate change.

The goal is to sensitize the media to report on climate change proactively, particularly before flash floods and glacial lake outbursts in vulnerable regions.

Romina Khurshid Alam is optimistic that the Kisan TV initiative will be a significant step towards creating a more climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in Pakistan.
