T20 World Cup 2024: Shai Hope wants West Indies to regain its former glory

  • Shai Hope wants the West Indies to regain dominance.
  • The West Indies are two-time T20 World Cup champions.
  • The West Indies won their first match against PNG.

Shai Hope, the West Indies batsman, views the T20 World Cup on their turf as a golden opportunity for the team to reclaim its former prestige.

The West Indies, known as the Men in Maroon, have clinched the T20 World Cup twice, first in 2012 and again in 2016, making them the initial team to secure two titles.

England is the only other team with two championships, having triumphed in 2010 and then in 2022.

Following their 2016 victory, which was marked by Carlos Brathwaite’s memorable four sixes off Ben Stokes in the final over against England, the West Indies’ international performance has waned.

Shai Hope stated on a Delhi Capitals podcast, “I don’t really want to say back to the top. I want to say get to the top because I don’t want to live in the past all the time. I would love to see us be the dominant force again around the world. I want West Indies to be looked at as an example for the other teams around the world again.”

He also shared his personal aspiration of winning a World Cup, saying, “Personally, I really want to win a World Cup. That was a dream of mine growing up for years, and it hasn’t changed. I don’t think it will ever change. And 2024 is a perfect opportunity to do so.”

The West Indies kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign with an exciting victory over Papua New Guinea on June 1 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Their upcoming matches are scheduled against Uganda on June 8, New Zealand on June 12, and Afghanistan on June 17.
